Why there are no street lights on the highway?

People who drive on the highway know that there is no street light on the highway except  near the city or the beltway. Why not to install the street light to enhance security when driving fast? Is it to save money? Of course not. Expressway does not install lights because of three reasons.

1.Not practical significant

All signs on the highway use reflective material. When the vehicle headlamps light to the signs, it will reflect the light and the driver can clearly see the contents of the signs. So it’s not necessary to have street lights. Besides, it cost a lot to maintain and manage them.

2.Good road conditions

Compared to ordinary roads, the highway does not allow non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians to drive on it. And the highway is relatively flat, the road condition is generally good with the vehicle headlamps. The first use of street lights is to make non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians travel safer, the second is to allow motor vehicle drivers to quickly identify obstacle. However, it’s not necessary to have street lights when there is no obstacle on the way.

3.Easy to dazzling

Because most of the highway is in the barren hills surrounded by darkness. When installing the lights, there is a certain interval between lights, the existence of this interval will let the lights flickering. The intermittent light is easy to make the driver feel dazzling and influence driving safety.

Conclusion: roadside lighting just plays a supporting role for travel safety. People’s security is  in their own hands. Having a good driving habit is the best way to protect their own safety.
